On Saturday Night, members of the Carman Fire Department
decorated Truck 132 to take part in the 43rd Annual Schenectady
Holiday Parade. The crew came up with some intuitive ideas on how to decorate
the Truck however due to high winds some of the decorations blew off on the
trip down to SCCC (the starting point). What repairs could have been done were
done, however Truck 132 still had that “best in class” image.

Thanks to all who helped out. ...

On Wednesday night a crew from the Carman Fire Department took
part in a Mutual Aid Drill with the Fort Hunter Fire Department in Guilderland.
Members staffed Truck 132, along with Chief 137, to take part in a burn drill
at the Guilderland Training Tower in Albany County. Two scenarios were played
out; The first one was that Truck 132 arrived first to a house fire in Fort
Hunter and assumed engine company operations, The second was that Truck 132
arrived as the first due truck company (most likely scenario) and performed
truck company operations (laddering, ventilation, and search and rescue task). All
in all the scenarios played out very well, with some small issues which were
noted and will be worked on in the future.

A special thanks for Fort Hunter for their invitation and hospitality
during the event. ...

As Hurricane Irene bared down on the Capital Region, the
Carman Volunteers were kept busy all day running a multitude of calls from
Wires Down, to Alarm Drops, to Mutual Aid Calls. The calls started around 4am Sunday,
when the outer edge of Irene was over the area, and lasted well into
Monday. A total of 15 volunteer staffed
the Carman Firehouse for roughly 14 hours to aid in the response. Engine 135
(mini pumper) and Utility 136 were outfitted with additional chain saws, generators,
and pumps to the anticipated high call volume.

In addition to calls within the districts of trees and wires
down, the Carman Volunteers also were dispatched to Rotterdam Junction to
assist in removing victims from their homes as the Mohawk River overflowed its
banks. Carman Volunteers assisted the water rescue teams for roughly 5 hours on
Monday while the river crested.

On Tuesday, Carman Volunteers were requested by Schenectady
County Fire Coordinator to assist in pumping out basements in the Stockade
District of the City of Schenectady due to major flooding in that area.
Volunteers from Carman and Rotterdam District #2 spent several hours down in
that area pumping out basements as best as possible.

When all totaled many hours went into keeping the residents
of Rotterdam District #3 safe from the winds and rains that Irene brought, in
addition to providing assistance to our neighboring Fire Departments.
